#BOM 2019: latest news

  • The Société Nautique de Genève (SNG) is delighted to welcome some 3,000 sailors who are getting ready to dispute the 81st Bol d’Or Mirabaud. Welcome to all, and have an excellent regatta and celebration! Here is a summary of the latest news!

    Let the celebration begin!

    Tonight, we party!

The activities begin at 18:00, with notably the weather briefing, the opening cocktail at 19:30 and the Time Machine concert starting at 20:30.

The most up to date information can be found on Lionel Fontannaz’s excellent blog. (Very) briefly, the 81st edition of the Bol d’Or Mirabaud will be very tactical given irregular winds. Pirmin Zurbriggen, BOM guest of honor

“I am delighted and proud to have been chosen as the 2019 Bol d’Or Mirabaud guest of honor. Even if I’m not familiar with the world of sailing, I am no stranger to competitive sports. This important event, a true lake celebration, is a great showcase for Switzerland and its lakes, starting with the Léman region and Geneva. I’m happy to be associated with it. The new generations of sailboats, with all their advanced technology, remind me of similar developments in the world of skis and bindings. I wish fair winds to all the sailors and wish them a 2019 edition rich in emotions and satisfaction.”

Watch out for floating wood in the eastern end of the lake

The last few weeks’ weather has significantly increased the amount of wood afloat in the Bouveret region this year. A dam was put in place near the mouth of the Rhône. Nonetheless, keep your eyes open!

    Let’s protect our beautiful lake!

With the support of the Association for Protection of Lake Léman, the Bol d’Or Mirabaud is providing some simple advice to limit our impact on the environment:

    • In general, avoid one-time use plastics!
    • Avoid one-time use plastic bottles, especially the small one that are so practical to keep in your pocket, but easily substituted with a reusable flask.
    • Don’t wrap your sandwiches in plastic.
    • Use rechargeable batteries, which are up to 30 times less harmful to the environment compared to disposable batteries for an equivalent amount of energy.
    • Smokers: don’t throw your butts in the lake!
    • Sort your waste. If your boat doesn’t allowing, bring a garbage back and sort your recyclables when you return.

The Bol d’Or Mirabaud supports the ASL (Association for Protection of Lake Léman) and the ICRC, and has implemented GivenGain, an online fundraising platform  in this context. This platform gives crews the opportunity to collect donations for the two causes. Please be generous: https://www.givengain.com/e/boldormirabaud2019/.
