“The Bol d’Or Mirabaud highlights our city well beyond its borders” - G. Barazzone

Geneva mayor, Guillaume Barazzone, talks to us about this emblematic race from the lake’s end.

    - What’s the importance of the Bol d’Or Mirabaud to Geneva?

    Guillaume Barazzone:
The Bol d’Or Mirabaud is a mythical regatta as the world’s most important lake regatta. This race brings sailing professionals and amateurs together. It’s one of the major sporting events of the year, highlighting our city well beyond its borders.

    - The Escalade race, the triathlon… is it your intention to add the Bol to this series of festive public sporting events?

    GB:
The Bol d’Or Mirabaud has become an institution for Genevans. In fact, the city adorns the Mont-Blanc bridge with flags for the occasion. Just like the Escalade race, this event brings out the masses, especially for the start. When you see all those boats leave, spinnakers flying when the wind is southerly, it’s one of the most beautiful images our harbor has to offer. One must also remember that boating is part of Geneva history. For a long time, freight arrived to town by boat from neighboring France or the canton of Vaud.

    - As mayor, what does this event mean to you?

    GB:
From a sport standpoint, it’s a tough competition, requiring knowledge of the lake if one aspires to perform well. It’s also an opportunity to test the limits of a team. In terms of notoriety, as stated, the Bold d'Or Mirabaud is precious for Geneva. I owe my gratitude to the organizers and sponsors such as Mirabaud for making it possible each year.

    - And have you already participated personally?

    GB:
Yes, I participated numerous times aboard a Surprise and aboard a Toucan. I especially remember endless hours at Le Bouveret waiting for the wind to give us a push. I also remember night maneuvers in challenging conditions. You really need to concentrate… but what fun!

    The ICRC with the BOM

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is pleased to announce its participation in the 79th edition of the Bol d’Or Mirabaud as its first ever benevolant partner.

The ICRC is the oldest humanitarian organization in the world. Founded more than 150 years ago in Geneva under the initiative of Henry Dunant, the organization’s mission is to help all war victims, independently of their political, religious, ethical or social beliefs. Since its creation, thanks to private and public benefactors, the ICRC has been able to provide its services to the most vulnerable people of the world.

Two crews made up of ICRC delegates will take the start at Port Noir on the weekend of June 17. Far from being able to compete with the most expert sailors in the completion, they will nonetheless enjoy the pleasure and privilege of participating in this mythical regatta alongside many hundreds of committed sailors. We are delighted to to participate in this humanitarian adventure with which we share the same values of rigor, determination and solidarity.

An ocean crew at the start this year

The Bol d’Or Mirabaud is pleased to welcome the professional Phaedo team this June. The American, Lloyd Thornburg, will take the start of this 79th edition aboard Decision 35, Phaedo2, previously Team Tilt. Winner of prestigious ocean regattas aboard a Farr 280 and a MOD 70, Lloyd will be accompanied in the BOM by his co-skipper Brian Thompson along with whom he already beat numerous ocean records.

“I’m looking forward to participating in the BOM for the first time this year,” confides Lloyd. “Ever since Rodolphe Gautier invited me to participate last year during the Round the Island at Cowes, I’ve been anxious to experience this race. To discover Lake Léman aboard a D35 is a nice opportunity for my crew and I’m very excited.”
